What Is a Baht Bus (Songthaew)
A baht bus or songthaew is a pickup truck with a roof and two long wooden benches for passengers—Pattaya's main public transport. Fares are fixed at 10-20 THB per person per trip with no timetable or set stops. You flag one anywhere along the route and push the buzzer to get off at your destination.
Baht bus colours and routes vary: blue runs the most popular loop in Central Pattaya, red/white run to Jomtien, and green/yellow lead to Naklua. Fares matter—foreigners often get overcharged without knowing the standard. Thai passengers pay 10 THB on short routes and 20 THB on longer ones. Never accept quotes of 100-200 THB.
Main Blue Loop Route
The blue loop is the main route running North-Central-South Pattaya, starting at Naklua Road, passing Central Pattaya Beach Road (southbound), turning at Walking Street, and heading north via Second Road, Central Festival, Mike Shopping Mall, and Big C Extra. One loop takes 35-50 minutes. Service runs 06:00-23:00 daily with a new vehicle every 5-10 minutes.
The most popular starting point is Central Festival Pattaya (1st floor street side) with seating, constant traffic, and mall staff to guide you. Another is the front of Walking Street, busy from evening to late night. The standard fare is 10 THB whether you ride half the loop or the whole thing. Late night (after 22:00) you may be quoted 20 THB.
Fares and How to Pay
How to pay: get off first, walk to the driver's window, hand over the fare, and say "kop kun krap/ka" (thank you). Paying only after you alight is crucial—paying in advance marks you as a clueless tourist and invites overcharging. Keep a 10 THB coin or 20 THB note ready; avoid large bills.
Real fares: Central Pattaya on the Blue Loop 10 THB, to Jomtien 20 THB, to Naklua 10-15 THB, cross-zone like Jomtien to Naklua 30 THB. After 22:00 add 10 THB per trip. If a driver quotes 100-200 THB, it is a scam—refuse and flag another vehicle; one passes every 5-10 minutes.
Etiquette and Seating Rules
Baht bus seating has unwritten etiquette that locals understand: (1) slide all the way to leave space beside you; (2) put large bags on your lap or between your feet, not on the seat next to you; (3) no loud talking or phone-speaker music; (4) no strong-smelling food or drinks; (5) men should offer seats to women, elders, and anyone carrying a child.
Boarding: spot a truly empty space before flagging—if the vehicle is full, drivers often do not stop. Standing alone as a foreigner tends to invite inflated fares, so stand with Thai passengers when possible. Getting off: buzzer buttons sit on the ceiling or inside wall; press about 20 metres before your stop and the driver will pull over immediately. Without a buzz, you will be carried past.
Jomtien and Naklua Routes
Jomtien route: board a blue baht bus at the end of Walking Street (Bali Hai Pier). The vehicle runs along Thappraya Road to Jomtien Beach Road at 20 THB per trip, 06:00-24:00. Some continue to Na Jomtien (30 THB) or Bang Saray (50 THB). For longer journeys, ask the driver the destination before boarding.
Naklua route: blue or green baht buses from the northern end of Central Road run along Naklua Road past Lan Pho Naklua market and Naklua Shopping Mall. Fare is 10 THB for the short run or 15 THB to the Sanctuary of Truth terminus. Route maps are unofficial—ask locals or check Google Maps before travelling.
Scams and Pro Tips
Common scams: (1) driver asks your destination before you board and quotes 100-300 THB flat—this is not a real baht bus but a songthaew taxi; refuse and flag the next one; (2) an empty baht bus often signals a charter or scam—wait for one carrying Thai passengers; (3) "I will go where you want, but you must rent the whole vehicle" is untrue—refuse.
Pro tips: use Google Maps on your phone to verify the route actually passes your destination. If the baht bus changes course (for example turning right when it should go straight), the driver is taking a special route and will likely charge more—get off immediately. After 23:00 baht buses thin out and fares rise slightly (+10 THB); after midnight Grab is safer and cheaper.
