Requirements

License: International Driving Permit (IDP) with motorcycle endorsement, or a valid Thai motorcycle license. Technically required by law.
ID: Passport copy. Some shops accept a photo on your phone.
Deposit: 2,000 - 5,000 THB cash or passport. Cash deposit strongly recommended over passport.
Insurance: Basic third-party insurance usually included. Full coverage (theft, damage) costs 100-200 THB/day extra. Highly recommended.

Safety Rules

Helmet: Required by law. Fine is 500 THB. Police checkpoints are common.
Drive on left: Thailand drives on the left side of the road.
Watch the road: Sand, water, oil on roads cause accidents. Especially careful after rain.
No drink driving: Strictly enforced. Random checkpoints especially on weekends and holidays.
Lock it: Always use the steering lock and a disc lock if provided. Theft does happen.

Coastal Road (Pattaya - Jomtien)

Scenic ride along Pratumnak Hill with ocean views. Best at sunset.

Jomtien to Sattahip

30 km

Quiet coastal road past Na Jomtien. Less traffic, beautiful scenery, seafood stops.

East Pattaya Hills

20 km

Winding roads through green hills. Visit Silverlake, vineyards, and countryside temples.

Naklua to Bang Saray

40 km

Full day ride. Pass through fishing villages, local markets, and quiet beaches.

Fuel & Maintenance

Petrol stations (PTT, Shell, Bangchak) are everywhere. Gasohol 91 is standard for scooters.
A full tank costs about 80-120 THB for a scooter and lasts 150-200 km.
For flat tires, look for shops with "Repair" signs -- common on side streets. Cost: 50-100 THB.
Check oil level, brakes, and tire condition before renting. Test the horn and lights.
Return the bike with the same fuel level you received it, or you may be charged extra.

Common Scams to Avoid

Pre-existing damage claims: Take detailed photos/video of the entire bike BEFORE riding away.
Inflated repair costs: Minor scratches should not cost thousands. Get a second opinion if in doubt.
Passport held hostage: Never leave your original passport. Leave a copy or cash deposit instead.
Insurance that does not exist: Ask to see the actual insurance document. Some shops claim coverage but have none.
Switched parts: Some shops swap a good part for a bad one and charge you for damage. Photo documentation helps.
