What Soi 6 actually is
Soi 6 is a short 400-metre lane connecting Beach Road to Second Road in central Pattaya, lined with nearly 100 small open-air beer bars packed side by side. Each bar has women standing out front calling to passers-by. It is often described as the most no-nonsense street in Pattaya, and its official name is Soi Yodsak.
Unlike Walking Street, Soi 6 is almost entirely small beer bars — no go-go bars and no big nightclubs. Most venues open around 11:00 and close by 02:00. The bars are largely interchangeable: a sofa, a short bar counter, a football TV and a basic drinks menu.
History and origin
Soi 6 took its current form in the 1990s as small beer bars clustered in the same lane. It was never planned as an entertainment zone the way Walking Street was, but the success of the first few venues drew copycats until the whole street was wall-to-wall beer bars.
Unlike Walking Street, which became a closed-off mega-attraction, Soi 6 kept its small scale and raw feel. It never tried to rebrand itself as family-friendly, and that is precisely why many repeat male tourists prefer it over Walking Street.
Vibe and when to visit
Between 13:00 and 17:00 Soi 6 feels completely different from the night version. Bars are open but half empty. Some repeat visitors come in the afternoon specifically to drink cold beer, watch football, and chat without any pressure. It is a good time for a first look.
After 19:00 the street's energy shifts dramatically. Every light is on, music pumps from every door and staff call from all directions. The busiest window is 21:00 to midnight. After 00:00 things wind down and some bars close early on weeknights.
Prices and lady drinks
Bottled beer in Soi 6 runs 100 to 140 baht, which is normal for Pattaya. Cocktails are 180 to 250 baht and lady drinks 160 to 220 baht. Bar fines run 600 to 1,200 baht during the day and 800 to 1,500 baht at night, varying by venue.
The golden rule is to ask for a printed price list before ordering and keep a receipt for every round. If a bar refuses to show prices or has nothing posted, walk out — those venues tend to be the ones that over-charge later.
Etiquette and safety
Staff here are working people with families and their own stories. Respectful conversation gets respectful treatment. Never use crude language, never touch anyone without permission, and always leave a minimum 20 to 50 baht tip when you close the bill.
For safety, watch your wallet and phone in your back pocket — use a money belt or a front pocket. Do not drink to blackout, and never walk back alone after midnight. Always take a Grab or metered taxi back to your hotel.
Alternatives if Soi 6 is not for you
If Soi 6 feels too intense, the softer alternatives nearby are Soi Buakhao and Soi LK Metro. Both are open-air beer-bar streets with fewer hostesses and roughly the same prices, more focused on drinks, music and pool than on company.
For travellers who want to skip bar-hostess culture entirely, try The Sky Gallery Pattaya on Pratumnak, Mata Gelato Bar, or the rooftop bars of larger hotels. These are relaxed, Instagram-friendly and work well for couples and families.
