Realistic Daily Food Budgets
Pattaya food budgets sit at three realistic levels. 150 THB per day for rice-and-curry plus noodles. 300 THB per day for a mix of Thai and occasional casual Western meals. 600 THB and up for regular Western food, cafes, and dining out.
Thai students and service workers in Pattaya typically eat on 150-200 THB a day including all three meals, drinks, and snacks. It is entirely doable if you know where to eat and avoid tourist zones.
Rice and Curry Shops
Rice-and-curry shops are the core of cheap eating. Pick two dishes from the tray over rice for 40-60 THB. Open morning until 2-3 PM. Recommended shops include Krua Suthep on Soi Buakhao, Krua Chao Ban on Soi 16, and vendors inside Lan Pho Naklua market.
Common dishes include pad kaprao, massaman beef, green curry, omelet, and mixed stir-fried vegetables. Arrive before 10 AM for the freshest selection. After 2 PM choices are limited.
Noodle Carts
Roadside noodle carts charge 40-50 THB per bowl. Choose thin or wide rice noodles, egg noodles, or glass noodles, with fishballs, stewed pork, or beef, or as a dry bowl. The best carts tend to sit outside temples or schools and run only during peak meal hours.
Look for lots of Thai customers. Six or seven tables and a short queue signals reliable quality. Boat noodle shops in Pattaya serve small 15-20 THB bowls, so ordering three or four is a full meal.
Evening Markets
Thepprasit Market runs Friday to Sunday with abundant cheap eats from 20 THB including grilled meatballs, pork skewers, sticky rice, khanom jeen, pad thai, som tam, and fruit salad. 150 THB per person feeds you completely.
Jomtien Night Market on Soi Chaiyapruek opens nightly near many budget accommodations with food at 30-80 THB. Grilled seafood stalls start at 50 THB for small prawns.
DIY Cooking
Many condos lack full kitchens but provide a rice cooker and small hot plate. Buy groceries at Tesco Lotus or Makro. Frozen meal packs run 40-60 THB and 7-Eleven rice boxes go for 35-45 THB.
The truly frugal buy a 1-kilo bag of rice for 30 THB, cook it in the condo, and buy 30-50 THB worth of curry from a rice-curry shop. Daily food cost drops to 100 THB.
Discount Apps and Coupons
Grab Food runs 50% off promos when new restaurants launch. LINE Man has weekly coupons. Wongnai discounts partner restaurants. Foodpanda offers buy-one-get-one deals in late afternoon.
True Privilege and AIS Serenade cards give 10-15% off at S&P, After You, and MK. Combined with apps you can cut mid-range restaurant bills by 30-40%. Factor in Pattaya delivery fees of 29-59 THB per order.
